A member of the OJ Simpson “Dream Team” is among the lawyers now representing the family of a Los Angeles man who was shot dead by sheriff’s deputies this week after dropping a gun during a traffic stop, the attorneys announced at a press conference Wednesday.
Carl Douglas, who was managing attorney at Johnnie Cochran’s law firm during the high-profile 1995 murder trial of the gridiron legend, is part of the legal team that is representing the family of Dijon Kizzee, who was shot and killed after a scuffle with LA deputies Monday.
Douglas appeared in the 2016 documentary, “OJ: Made in America” about the famous murder case.
“We together are committed to put our collective might to fight the county of Los Angeles,” he said of the Kizzee case. “This is more than just a case for me. This is part of my life… When I heard that Dijon Kizzee was shot more than 15 times in the back, that sounds to me like an execution.”
He called Kizzee’s legal team — which also includes attorneys Ben Crump and Dale Galipo — “a new civil rights dream team.”
Kizzee, 29, was shot and killed by Los Angeles sheriff’s deputies on Monday after police tried to stop him for a bicycle “code violation.”
He fled the cops and punched one deputy in the face during a scuffle — dropping a handgun that was wrapped in clothes he was holding. That’s when the deputies opened fire, striking him more than 20 times, Kizzee’s family said.
The family’s lawyers said they are weighing a lawsuit against the department, but have not determined if it will be in state or federal court.
“Dijon was my nephew but was more like a son to me,” said Fletcher Fair, the dead man’s aunt, who said she became a parent to Kizzee after his mother died in 2011. “This is very heartbreaking for me and my family. All I want is justice for my nephew Dijon. If we could get that please.”
The shooting sparked a new round of protests in the city.
