UFC welterweight Mike Perry is facing allegations of abuse, accusations he denies. His ex-wife Danielle Nickerson says he has physically abused her “a handful of times,” and as recently as February.
“This is nothing to hurt him,” Nickerson told MMA Junkie. “I know that my words are not going to have an impact on his career.”
The website confirmed her accounts by obtaining 911 audio and court records. She says that on Feb. 10 he attacked her in her home, “ground-and-pounded” her, forcing her to flee. The 911 audio even has Perry’s mother, Sabra Young, saying her son was “violent.”
“It was like a movie,” Nickerson said. “You’re like, this isn’t my life. What is happening right now? I [thought] if I don’t leave and run out of this house, I will die.”
Other incidents allegedly include him hitting her on her forehead and leaving a mark with his wedding ring, and on another occasion bruising her eye and lip. In March, she filed a protective order against Perry, but it was denied by a judge in Florida, who cited relationship problems not equating to domestic violence.
“This is not (something UFC president Dana White will see) and be like, ‘He’s cut.’ There’s no way. I don’t have that sort of impact. This is not for that,” Nickerson said.
“This is for helping others. This is for getting the word out there about what you can do to help people in a domestic violence situation and the warning signs and how to not get this deep into something. Hopefully this will be something that pushes the UFC into doing more checks on their heads and brain damage and really taking care of them physically.”
Perry denied the allegations on social media, writing that he never laid a finger on Nickerson.
“I would like to address this here now. First and foremost I did not put my hands on my ex at any point in our short term marriage,” he wrote. “Secondly, I have already admitted to having an issue with alcohol, and I have been a part of an intensive rehab program that was able to help address not only that but also helped me with anger management.
“After the completion of the course, I realized that I had said some things in the past that do not put me and what I stand for in the best of light and for that I apologize. I am now in a loving relationship where I am looking forward and excited to welcoming my first born. I’m hopeful my ex can move on and find peace as I have.”
Perry went into treatment after video in July showed him punching an elderly man at a Texas restaurant.
