The DJ who posted images of Saquon Barkley and Daniel Jones at a bar without masks said the photo and video, shared to Instagram on Friday, were from last year and thus not a potential violation of the NFL’s COVID-19 protocols.
The picture of a maskless Jones and Barkley, both 23 years old, made its way around social media Saturday, but the original poster, DJ Lugghead, said they were from last October and not Friday night.
“It was all posts from last year,” the DJ said in a phone interview Saturday. “It’s a memory that popped up from a year ago. That’s why I posted it.”
Instagram has a feature that allows users to share old posts.
The DJ said he did not have proof the photo and videos were from last year because he had deleted everything by Saturday afternoon.
“I actually deleted everything after all this nonsense,” he said.
The picture was captioned, “Rockin wit Danny dimes and Saquon.” The DJ also posted a video of Jones taking a sip of a drink handed to him by an unidentified woman and another that appeared to show a man resembling Barkley riding a bike in the street. Barkley is set to undergo surgery next week after tearing his ACL on Sept. 20.
DJ Lugghead said he did play at Common Ground in the Meatpacking District on Friday night — the bar says on its website it is open for 25 percent capacity indoor dining — but that the photo and videos in question were not from that bar. He said they may have been from a bar last fall in Hoboken.
The Giants declined to comment and the NFL did not immediately return a request for comment. Under the league’s COVID-19 protocols, players can be fined for conduct detrimental if they are found to have engaged in “reckless” behavior, according to ESPN, including attending an indoor bar with more than 10 people (other than to pick up a to-go order) without wearing a mask, per USA Today.
The Giants had this weekend off after playing on Thursday night in Philadelphia, when they blew an 11-point lead in the final 6:17 to lose to the Eagles, 22-21. But DJ Lugghead said Jones and Barkley did not spend Friday night out at Common Ground.
“They weren’t out there last night at all,” he said.
