AUSTIN, Texas — The Latest on the killing of an 18-year-old dance student at the University of Texas. (All times local).

7:15 p.m.

Hundreds have attended a University of Texas vigil honoring a first-year dance student whose slaying has shocked the campus.

Eighteen-year-old Haruka Weiser was last seen leaving a university drama building Sunday night. Her body was discovered in a creek in the heart of the university’s Austin campus on Tuesday.

The crowd that gathered Thursday evening on UT’s East Mall held a moment of silence, then heard speeches from students, administrators and faculty members.

Organizers distributed black ribbons and note cards for writing messages. Grief counselors also attended.

Police have released surveillance video of a man they say is a suspect in the case. An autopsy showed Weiser was assaulted, but authorities have not shared details of how she died.

This update has been corrected to show that Weiser was last seen leaving a university drama building, not a dance building.

A University of Texas dance student who was killed on the Austin campus was a graduate of an Oregon high school for creative students, and school officials there say she was a talented person with great promise.

Eighteen-year-old Haruka Weiser graduated last year from the Arts & Communication Magnet Academy in Beaverton, just outside of Portland.

Principal Michael Johnson said during a news conference Thursday at the Oregon school that his heart is heavy because of what Weiser’s family is going through.

Johnson says on Wednesday, before Weiser’s death was confirmed, he talked to students who were in the same advanced dancing program as Weiser and knew her. He says he told them they should keep dancing because that is what their friend would want.

Johnson says Weiser’s sister, Naomi, is currently a student at the school.

This update has been corrected to show that the high school where Weiser graduated is in Beaverton, Oregon, not Portland.

A first-year University of Texas dance student was the victim of a homicide and police are searching for a man seen near the heart of campus, where her body was found.

Campus President Greg Fenves identified the victim Thursday as 18-year-old Haruka Weiser from Portland, Oregon.

Assistant Austin Police Chief Troy Gay says Weiser was seen leaving UT’s drama building around 9:30 p.m. Sunday. She never made it back to her dorm.

Investigators released surveillance video of a man they say is a suspect walking a bike around 11 p.m. Sunday along a nearby street.

Gay would only say that Weiser was assaulted. He didn’t release details.

Weiser was reported missing Monday, and her body was found the following day in a creek near the alumni center and football stadium.

The University of Texas says a woman found dead in the heart of its campus was a first-year theater and dance student who had been reported missing.

Campus President Greg Fenves and Austin police identified the victim Thursday as 18-year-old Haruka Weiser, from Portland, Oregon. Investigators are treating her slaying as a homicide.

Fenves called it a “horrifying and incomprehensible crime” calling the “unthinkable brutality against Haruka … an attack on our entire family.”

Police have released no information on how she died.

Weiser was found Tuesday in a creek near the campus alumni center and football stadium. Fenves said she was reported missing Monday morning.

Fenves says campus authorities are working with Austin police “to locate and apprehend a suspect quickly.”
